Learn about, review, and discuss in-course assessment in this online minicourse for new and experienced instructors. We will reflect on why we assess, including how assessment communicates our values, promotes critical thinking, and invites or inhibits deep understanding as we explore the complementary roles of formative and summative assessment types. Of course, we will have to discuss how AI is changing everything and how we can design assessments in this reshaped environment, but don't expect easy answers.
The course consists of five modules, each designed to take approximately 60 minutes. While there will not be any synchronous components, participants are expected to complete activities and engage in discussions at regular intervals. The offering dates include two weekends to provide participants with additional flexibility to do the work during the semester.
Participants will leave with a collection of formative and summative assessment ideas and strategies, as well as practical ideas about how to approach assessment in the age of AI.
