Know & Go
This series of 15-minute professional development sessions are designed to help instructors quickly learn, experience, and adapt mindfulness-informed practices that support student learning. Each session focuses on a common teaching and learning challenge, such as helping students settle their attention, re-engage when motivation is low, manage cognitive or emotional overload, or transition into challenging course activities.
Rather than asking instructors to become mindfulness experts or devote significant class time to contemplative practice, Know & Go emphasizes brief, purposeful techniques that can be integrated into courses across disciplines. Participants will experience a strategy from the learner's perspective, explore why and when it may support learning, and leave with practical guidance for adapting it to their own teaching context.
Sessions also recognize that students differ in their comfort with and responses to contemplative practices. Techniques will therefore emphasize choice, accessibility, and trauma-informed implementation, including options that do not require students to close their eyes, focus on their breathing, disclose personal experiences, or participate in ways that may cause discomfort.
15-Minute Format
Each session follows a simple Know → Experience → Go structure:
- KNOW | 3–4 minutes
What teaching or learning challenge are we addressing? What does research or theory suggest about why this practice may help? - EXPERIENCE | 5–6 minutes
Participants experience one brief mindfulness-informed technique as their students might. - GO | 5–6 minutes
Participants consider when the technique might be useful in their own course and receive options for adapting it for different disciplines, class sizes, modalities, and student needs.
Presenters: Payal Khosla, Amanda Tennyson, Spencer Willis, and Erin Galyen.
