Faculty who teach GE Writing Attribute or Writing Emphasis courses in the major are encouraged to participate in the 2025–2026 Antiracist WAC Fellows program, an initiative through UCATT. Aligned with U of A's institutional mission, this year-long professional development opportunity explores Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) principles and equity-driven pedagogy in higher education.

Each WAC Faculty Fellow will receive $1000 compensation for completing a year of professional development. Our mission is to support equitable, transformative, and transferable writing experiences for students by supporting all instructors and disciplines. We do this by educating and supporting folks' learning about WAC and antiracism so they can become agents of change in their contexts. Aligned with our university status as a land-grant, HSI institution, WAC Faculty Fellows will be able to:

  • Articulate key principles in Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), including writing-to-learn (WTL), and writing in the disciplines (WID) pedagogies.
  • Interrogate writing practices in terms of social linguistic justice and our context as a Hispanic Serving Institution.
  • Critically evaluate writing expectations within disciplines in order to guide students to write effectively in professional contexts.
  • Design evidence-based and meaningful writing assignments.
  • Develop contextually-driven writing assessment.
  • Assign reflection to support students to make connections in their writing development across experiences and educational opportunities.
  • Plan professional development for colleagues interested in writing instruction in their local context.

What will we do?

Participants will commit to a full year of programming. The fall semester focuses on learning about antiracist WAC pedagogy and linguistic justice. The spring semester focuses on putting this knowledge into action.

  • During the fall, WAC Fellows dedicate two hours weekly beginning fall semester, including:
    • Synchronous activitiesmeetings will explore topics, readings, and materials.
    • Asynchronous activities: readings, podcasts, and sustained reflection will guide fellows in understanding the principles of WAC and antiracist writing pedagogy, as well as exploring ideas for the goals of their independent project in the spring semester.
  • During the spring, Fellows will develop a project of their choosing (e.g. course redesign, article, workshop for department, etc.) with a mentor, culminating in a presentation at the WAC Symposium.
  • Faculty Fellows participate in our WAC National Day on Writing Professional Development (October).
