Emily Jo Schwaller

Assistant Director, Writing Across the Curriculum

Emily Jo Schwaller is originally from East Helena, Montana where she comes from a family of teachers from preschool to college. She did her Master’s at NC State in English before coming to UArizona to study for her Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Composition, and the Teaching of English. Before joining the University Center for Assessment, Teaching, and Technology, she worked in General Education, where she still has the opportunity to collaborate with her wonderful learning partners. Emily Jo’s work focuses on writing and learning, graduate student and future faculty growth, and reflective writing. Her research can be found in Composition Forum, New Directions for Teaching and Learning, Composition Studies, and WPA: Writing Program Administration, where she worked as an Assistant Editor.

Current activities include:

  • Consulting with instructors and teachers on writing, technology, and teaching
  • Supporting instructors designing signature assignments for General Education
  • Supporting ePortfolio initiatives across campus, including running the ePortfolio website
  • Designing and supporting instructors through resources and the Writing and Learning Project website
  • Facilitating professional development in writing, learning, and technology
  • Collaborating with the Writing Center, Writing Across the Curriculum, Coalition of Writing, and other writing support offices and initiatives across campus
  • Teaching and offering professional development for graduate students in the Certificate in College Teaching

When not working she enjoys her two cats, the Tucson food scene, and participating in the University Community Chorus.
